My core passion in life is to transform the lives of individuals towards living at their highest potential. This dream rests on the pillars of having exceptional health along with clear focus and joy in the mind. I have always believed in doing this by leveraging personalized methods encompassed within a holistic approach. A significant inspiration to help others live well comes from my background as a professional athlete for over a decade. Pushing the boundaries of human performance is what top athletes do, and with my experience in the health sciences, I look for every opportunity to do just that. Bringing these high-performance concepts to each individual is where I see the future of health for people from all walks of life, not just professional athletes.
The main facets of my life endeavors include next-generation health research as a physician-scientist, competing as a professional mountain athlete, and being a dutiful citizen of my community. Integrating the insights from these three components fuels my drive towards helping people live at their best.
Science
My primary scientific research objectives bridge the gap between health sciences, technology, and high-performance health. As part of the NIH funded Medical Scientist Training Program, I am an M.D. / Ph.D. scholar at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine (M.D.) and the UCI Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Science (Ph.D.) with Ramesh Jain. I completed my Ph.D. under the guidance of Dr. Ramesh Jain in the field of Health State Estimation and Personal Health Navigation. I graduated summa cum laude with a triple major from the University of California, Berkeley in Molecular and Cell Biology - Biochemistry, Nutrition Metabolism, and Integrative Biology (focused on exercise physiology). My research background includes working on metabolism during exercise in the Brooks Lab, mechanisms of nutrition and preventing aging in the Hellerstein Lab, and cellular signaling in adipocytes (fat cells) in the Sul Lab. Before my scientific research at UC Berkeley, I worked in several biotechnology ventures, including Calyx Therapeutics, Bexel Pharmaceuticals, and Renovel Discoveries.
Athletics
Parallel to my career in science, I am a professional multi-discipline cyclist riding for Santa Cruz Bicycles and Smith Optics, and a climbing, backpacking, and ski touring guide sponsored by Petzl and Osprey Packs. I have been at the elite level of cycling for 10+ years, have 85 wins in various events, and have placed on the top 5 podium in numerous United States National Championships. I enjoy the depths of everything from road, gravel/cyclocross, cross country, and gravity mountain disciplines of enduro and downhill.
In addition to my athletic career, I have built several programs for developing athletes and healthy lifestyles. These efforts include the first espoir + junior focused mountain bike team in California (NRL Racing), the National Interscholastic Cycling Association, the Cal Climbing Team, the UCI Climbing Team, and Outdoor Nation. My formal training includes certifications from the USA Cycling Olympic Committee as a Coach and Race Mechanic, National Outdoor Leadership School backpacking guide, Leave No Trace instructor, and mixed martial arts instructor. I humbly hold the distinction of “Outdoor Idol,” an OIA industry-wide international award for the top 10 impactful outdoor athletes. Prior to my cycling career, I was a competitive martial artist and instructor, earning a 2nd dan Black Belt from Ernie Reyes West Coast World Martial Arts. As an aircraft pilot, I also enjoy integrating high-performance principles from aviation and aeronautics to optimize health further.
What I have learned from these experiences is amalgamated into the Alpine Athlete experience. I look forward to helping everyone reach beyond the horizon of what they can do in life.
